As we begin an exciting new chapter here at Woodart Workshops, we have two very important announcements to share with all our members, friends, and everyone who supports our club. It is a moment of change, but also a wonderful opportunity to celebrate incredible service, while looking forward with enthusiasm to what lies ahead.
First, it is with great pleasure and warmth that we officially welcome John Gregory as our new Chairman. John has been a valued and active member of our club for a long time, well-known for his skill as a woodturner, his willingness to help others, and his deep understanding of exactly what makes Woodart Workshops such a special place. He has been involved in every aspect of our activities — from helping at exhibitions and supporting our demonstrations, to assisting with workshops and always being on hand with advice, encouragement, or a friendly chat. John fully shares our belief in being a member-led organisation, where everyone has a voice, skills are shared freely, and friendship and creativity come first. We are confident that under his guidance, our club will continue to grow, thrive, and offer even more opportunities for everyone to enjoy the craft we all love. We wish him every success in his new role, and we know he has the full support of every member as he leads us forward.
Before we look too far ahead, however, it is only right that we pay the highest possible respect and tribute to the man who has led us so wonderfully for the past eight years — our outgoing Chairman, Hugh Hoather. For an incredible eight years, Hugh has been the steady hand, the guiding voice, and the driving force behind everything we do. During his time in the role, he has overseen so many milestones: from our popular exhibitions and expert demonstrations, to the development of our workshops and classes, our charity work, and the growth of our membership. He has led with dedication, patience, good humour, and a genuine passion for wood art and for people.
Under Hugh’s leadership, we have maintained our unique identity as a club with no formal committee, where decisions are made together and every member matters. He has been there through every busy club night, every event, and every challenge, always putting the club and its people first. He has welcomed new members, supported long-standing ones, and ensured that our workshop remains a safe, friendly, and inspiring space for everyone. The progress we have made, the friendships we have built, and the reputation we enjoy today are in no small part thanks to his hard work, vision, and commitment.
On behalf of every member past and present, we say a huge and heartfelt thank you, Hugh. Your eight years of service have left a lasting legacy, and we are truly grateful for everything you have done for Woodart Workshops. While you may have stepped down as Chairman, we are delighted that you will remain a valued and active member of our club — your experience, your skills, and your company are just as important to us as ever.
Change is part of every journey, but here, the values and spirit that Hugh helped to strengthen will always remain at our core. We now look forward to working alongside John Gregory as he takes up the chair, building on that strong foundation and leading us into this exciting new era.
Please join us in thanking Hugh for his outstanding service, and in wishing John every success as he steps into this new role.
